Experience

Editorial Apprenticeship with genesis
I served as an Editorial Apprentice for IU Indy's Literary & Arts Magazine, genesis, through the class ENG - W280 Literary Editing & Publishing. I gained hands-on experience and insight into what it takes to make a literary magazine from beginning to end. Not only did I get to practice these skills by assisting in the editorial process of genesis, but I also learned how to develop a personal editing philosophy.

Community Engagement Intern with The Frederick Douglass Papers
During my time with The Frederick Douglass Papers at IUI, I handle all social media and online content creation. I maintained and updated the Squarespace website, created informational handouts, managed content and engagement on the Facebook page, and assisted with the production of the Frederick Douglass Speaks Out podcast.

Creative Writing Tutor with the Kurt Vonnegut Museum & Library
As a Creative Writing Tutor with the Kurt Vonnegut Museum & Library Writing Centers, I worked in local Indianapolis High Schools with students. In this role, I supported the students in their goals towards academic success while also nurturing their creative pursuits. I acted as a co-editor for the student literary magazine to make sure each piece was ready for publication in the print copy of the magazine.

Communications Intern with The Center for Transfer and Adult Students
As a Communications Intern with The Center for Transfer and Adult Students at IU Indy, I helped create communication channels that better connected students with important information and resources. I also assisted with project management for student events, organizing things like student data, calendars, and communication updates.

Skills

Professional & Creative Writing
As an English - Creative Writing major, writing has been at the center of my studies. I have taken classes that focus on the craft of writing in genres like fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and screenwriting. I have also taken classes on professional writing, learning how to write memos, professional emails, recommendation reports, and more. My minors in Communication Studies and Sociology also required proficiency in academic writing to create thorough research essays. Through writing research and academic essays, I became proficient in using search databases and locating accurate and relevant sources to support my claims.

Editing
During my studies and my professional experiences, I have been able to gain knowledge and practice in the art of editing. While writing and creating content in my various roles throughout IUI, I had to become familiar with the IU Editing Style and branding to ensure what I was creating aligned with the style of the university. Through these projects and my class work, I was also able to become familiar with other editing style guides like AP and Chicago. Through the course ENG-W280 Literary Editing & Publishing, I developed personal editing philosophies and studied the process of editing and publishing written work.

Social Media
Many of my professional experiences during my undergraduate studies involved social media and content creation. From these experiences, I gained skills in website creation through Wix and Squarespace, used content publishing and management tools like Buffer, and created graphics and images through Adobe Creative Express, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe InDesign, and Canva. I got to hone my skill of writing in a brand voice different from my own so that my content would better fit the organization/setting I was creating it for.
