Creative Writing Tutor
Kurt Vonnegut Museum & Library Youth Writing Centers
I worked as a Creative Writing Tutor through the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library's Youth Writing Centers. The writing centers support various high schools in the Indianapolis area. I worked with students to hone their creative writing skills while also supporting their academic goals. Each writing center creates a literary magazine at the end of the year to show off the work created by students throughout the school year. I acted as a co-editor for my writing center literary magazine, focusing on polishing student work for final publication while being intentional in maintaining the individual voice in each piece.
Notice

I built strong bonds with the students during my time as one of their tutors. They showed me immense trust with their writing and art. Due to this trust and the nature of working with minors, I can't share any examples of my work here.

Impact
While I can't share any pictures or examples of my work, I can brag about the overall impact that the writing centers had on the students they supported. I was only a small piece of a larger organization filled with people passionate about the impact that was possible with the work we were doing.

4 Writing Centers & Counting
17,000 student appointments (40% increase from last year)
6,500 tutoring hours logged (85% increase from last year)

You can't simply quantify the total impact of the Youth Writing Centers. The above numbers, though, paint a strong picture of the passion those involved have for the meaningful change they can create. There are no numbers on smiles shared, breakthroughs reached, or lasting connections made. But they happened every day. While I don't have much to share here, I am proud of the work I accomplished with the students at the Youth Writing Center.
